The sports were a two miles bicycle race, a 100 yards foot race and a three laps bicycle handicap ‘combination' race. Local man Joseph Hill** won the two miles race.

On Wednesday 27th June 1883, a two miles handicap race and a two miles scratch race for a gold medal was advertised between G Hunter and L Marshall. Unfortunately the evening was wet, so the meeting was re-arranged for Saturday 7th July. Open air dancing at the ground was introduced during the summer of 1883.

The Middlesbrough Daily Gazette on 20th August 1883 reported that "A series of sports came off on Saturday last on the West Hartlepool bicycle track in which GW Waller (long distance champion) and JW Lamb (short distance champion) came together," After some amateur races the principal feature was a ten miles race between Waller and Lamb for £15 first prize and £5 second. Waller was on a Rudge Racer machine and gave Lamb thirty seconds start. Waller caught Lamb after three miles and the two stayed together until the last lap when Waller spurted to the finish line and won by half a yard in 32min 25sec. The attendance at the event was poor and a lot of the riders who entered the other events failed to start.

Waller was at this time putting on 6 day races with his portable track, and in October 1883 the marquee and track were erected in Albert Road Middlesbrough.

Hartlepool ABC organised a 7 hour Amateur Bicycle Contest for club members, which started on Monday 26th August 1883. Contestants would ride for one hour each evening, Monday to Friday, then two hours on Saturday afternoon.

West Hartlepool Bicycle Club held their 2nd annual sports at the ground on Whit Monday 1884. The two miles scratch race was for a three guinea prize and a ten guinea challenge cup, the other bicycle races were a one mile under 12s handicap, one mile scratch, two miles handicap and a one mile match race between G Manners and R King. On Wednesday evening 1st June, a one mile handicap and a three miles scratch race were held, the event advertisement added "All the best local riders. Admission 3d. Ladies free."

On 1st October 1890, there was a five miles match race between Bentley of Station Town and Earl of West Hartlepool. This was probably the last bicycle race at Hart Road as Joseph Hill opened a bicycle ground in Grange Road in 1890.

** Joseph Hill ran a bicycle depot on Whitby Street, West Hartlepool and was the local Swift safety bicycle dealer. Hill opened a Bicycle Ground in 1890 which was known as Hill's bicycle track.
